iHow it is calculated
There are two ways to work out holiday pay. For fixed hours, a week of leave equals a week of pay — a day's pay is your weekly pay ÷ your normal days per week. For irregular-hours or part-year workers, holiday accrues at 12.07% of the hours (or pay) worked in a pay period; employers may also pay it as a 52-week average or roll it up into the hourly rate (with at least a 12.07% uplift shown separately). Either way, holiday pay is taxed as ordinary earnings.
A fixed-hours worker on £500/week over 5 days takes 5 days' leave → a week's pay of £500 gross; taxed as normal pay (basic rate: −£100 income tax − £40 NI = £360 net). An irregular-hours worker who earns £1,000 in a pay period accrues 12.07% = £120.70 of holiday pay, taxed the same way.

How much holiday am I entitled to?
Almost all workers get 5.6 weeks of paid statutory holiday a year. For a 5-day week that is 28 days (the legal cap); part-timers get the same 5.6 weeks pro-rated to their days per week.
How is holiday pay calculated for fixed hours?
A week of leave equals a week of normal pay. A day's holiday pay is your weekly pay divided by the number of days you normally work each week, so five days off pays a full week's wage.
What is the 12.07% holiday accrual?
For irregular-hours and part-year workers, holiday builds up at 12.07% of the hours worked in each pay period. The figure comes from 5.6 weeks of leave ÷ 46.4 working weeks in a year.
Who counts as an irregular-hours or part-year worker?
Someone whose paid hours vary each period, or who is only paid part of the year (for example term-time staff). For leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024 they accrue holiday at 12.07%.
Is rolled-up holiday pay allowed?
Yes, for irregular-hours and part-year workers. The employer adds an uplift of at least 12.07% to each payslip and shows it as a separate line, instead of paying holiday when leave is taken.
Is holiday pay taxed?
Yes. Holiday pay is treated as normal earnings, so income tax and National Insurance are deducted through PAYE exactly as they are on your regular wages.
How is holiday pay worked out for part-time workers?
Part-timers get 5.6 weeks pro-rated to their working pattern. If you work 3 days a week, 5.6 weeks is 16.8 days of paid leave, each paid at your normal daily rate.
What is the 52-week reference period?
When pay varies, a week's pay is the average of the last 52 weeks in which you were paid (ignoring unpaid weeks, looking back up to 104 weeks). This average is then used for each week of leave.
Do I get paid for holiday I did not take when I leave?
Yes. Any statutory holiday you accrued but did not use is paid out when your job ends. This payment is taxed as normal earnings like the rest of your final pay.
