iHow it is calculated

A trip’s fuel cost is found from distance, consumption and the fuel price:

cost = (distance × consumption ÷ 100) × price

A 300 km trip at 7 L/100 km and 7.5 per litre: 21 litres × 7.5 = 157.5 one way (315 round trip).

?Frequently asked questions

How is the cost of a car trip calculated?

Multiply distance by average consumption (L/100 km), divide by 100 to get the litres needed, then multiply by the fuel price. The result is the trip’s fuel cost.

How much fuel do I use for a given distance?

Litres = distance (km) × consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100. For example, 300 km at 7 L/100 km needs 300 × 7 ÷ 100 = 21 litres.

How much does a 300 km trip cost?

At 7 L/100 km and a price of 7.5 per litre: 21 litres × 7.5 = about 157.5 one way, double for a round trip.

Does the cost include motorway tolls and the vignette?

No, the calculator covers fuel only. In Romania add the rovinieta, and in other countries the motorway tolls and vignettes, which can be significant.

How do I estimate the real cost per kilometre?

Besides fuel, the real cost includes wear (tyres, oil, servicing), insurance and depreciation. These usually add another 30–50% on top of the fuel cost.

Is it cheaper by car or by train?

It depends on distance and the number of passengers. For a single person the train is often cheaper; for 3–4 people a shared car becomes competitive. Compare with the split-cost calculator.

How do I reduce the cost of a long trip?

Drive at a steady, moderate speed, split the cost with passengers, refuel at cheaper stations off the motorway and plan the route to avoid detours.

What fuel price should I use?

Use the current price at your usual station. In Romania, petrol and diesel typically hover around 7–8 per litre, but check the day’s value.
