iHow it is calculated

The total fuel cost is divided by the number of people to find each one’s contribution:

per person = total cost ÷ number of people

A 600 km round trip (7 L/100 km, 7.5 per litre) costs ≈ 315; split between 4 people = ≈ 79 each.

?Frequently asked questions

How do I split the cost of a trip between passengers?

Calculate the total fuel cost (distance × consumption ÷ 100 × price) and divide by the number of people. The result is the amount each one pays.

How much does each passenger pay for a trip?

For example, a 600 km round trip at 7 L/100 km and 7.5 per litre costs about 315; split between 4 people that is roughly 79 each.

Should the driver also pay their share?

In friendly carpooling the cost is usually split equally, including the driver. Some groups exempt the driver in exchange for driving and vehicle wear — agree upfront.

Are road tolls included in the split?

You can add the vignette, motorway tolls and parking to the total cost before splitting, for a fair calculation. This calculator covers fuel only.

Is it legal to ask passengers for money for carpooling?

Genuinely splitting costs among friends or colleagues is common and accepted. It becomes an issue only if you turn transport into a commercial, for-profit activity without permits.

How do I split fairly if passengers get off along the way?

A fair method is to calculate the cost per segment and split each segment only among those in the car for that stretch of road.

Is carpooling worth it financially?

Yes. Split between 3–4 people, the cost per head drops dramatically and is often cheaper than the train or coach, especially over medium distances.

Which apps help split trip costs?

There are carpooling platforms (such as BlaBlaCar) that automatically calculate passenger contributions. For a group of acquaintances, this calculator is enough.
