iHow it is calculated
Value = fine-gold grams × price per gram of fine gold. A coin carries its pure-gold content: a full Sovereign = 7.3224 g fine, a Britannia = 31.1035 g (1 troy ounce), a Krugerrand = 1 oz fine. For custom weight, enter grams or troy ounces and the carat: 24ct = 999‰, 22ct = 916‰, 18ct = 750‰, 14ct = 585‰, 9ct = 375‰ — fine gold = weight × fineness/1000. 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g.
value = weight × (fineness ‰ ÷ 1000) × price per gram fine
A full gold Sovereign (7.3224 g fine) at a fine-gold price of £96/g is worth about £703. Scrap: 15 g of 9ct (375‰) gold = 15 × 0.375 = 5.625 g fine ≈ £540. A 1 oz Britannia at the same price ≈ £2,986.

?Frequently asked questions
How much is a gram of gold worth today?
The tool prices gold from a per-gram fine-gold (24ct) reference (around £96/g in mid-2026, but the spot price moves). Enter your dealer's buy or sell price to get a real quote — dealers pay under and sell over the reference (a spread).
How much is a gold Sovereign worth?
A full Sovereign contains 7.3224 g of fine gold (7.98805 g at 22ct). Multiply that by the price per gram of fine gold — at £96/g that's about £703. A half Sovereign is roughly half that. Select 'Sovereign' from the list.
How is scrap gold value calculated by carat?
Fine gold = weight × fineness. 24ct = 999‰, 22ct = 916‰, 18ct = 750‰, 14ct = 585‰, 9ct = 375‰. For example 10 g of 18ct = 10 × 0.750 = 7.5 g fine gold, then × price per gram fine.
Are gold Sovereigns and Britannias tax-free?
They're free of Capital Gains Tax because they're UK legal tender — any gain, however large, is CGT-exempt. Investment-grade gold (bars ≥995 fine, HMRC-listed coins) is also VAT-free; most jewellery carries 20% VAT.
How do I convert troy ounces to grams?
1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams (not the 28.35 g avoirdupois ounce). In custom-weight mode pick 'Ounces' and the tool converts before applying the carat.
What's the difference between reference and dealer price?
The reference is a mid-market price per gram of fine gold. A dealer buys below and sells above it (a spread), and coins carry a premium. For what you'd actually receive when selling, enter the dealer's buy price in the price field.
What is a Britannia worth?
A 1 oz gold Britannia contains 31.1035 g of fine gold (999.9). At £96/g that's about £2,986 of metal value; the coin itself sells at a small premium to spot and is CGT-free.
Can I value old jewellery for selling?
Yes. Weigh the item, choose its carat (usually 9ct or 18ct in the UK), and enter the price per gram of fine gold your buyer offers. The tool shows the fine-gold content and the value.
