About Business & Commerce calculators
Business and commerce calculators put numbers on selling: profit margin and markup, the final selling price with VAT, discounts, the break-even point, stock turnover and average purchase cost — plus shipping and parcel volumetric weight, a freelancer’s hourly rate and website or app ad revenue. Useful for a shop, an online store or your own freelance work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is the same profit as a percentage of the selling price — so for a given profit the margin is always the smaller number.
How do I calculate profit margin?
Divide the profit by the selling price and multiply by 100; the result is the margin as a percentage, showing how much of each sale you keep.
What is the break-even point?
The break-even point is the number of units or the revenue at which total income equals total cost — below it you make a loss, above it a profit. The calculator finds it from your fixed and variable costs.
What is volumetric weight and why does the courier charge for it?
Couriers charge by whichever is larger: the real weight or the volumetric weight, calculated from the parcel’s dimensions. A big, light box costs as much as a heavy one because it fills the same van space.
How should a freelancer set an hourly rate?
Start from the yearly income you need, add taxes, tools and unpaid time (holidays, admin, finding clients), then divide by the hours you can actually bill. The calculator does this arithmetic for you.
