Volumetric Weight Calculator

Find the volumetric and chargeable weight of a parcel from its dimensions and actual weight — useful for courier and freight shipping.

iHow it is calculated

Volumetric weight is the parcel volume divided by a divisor set by the carrier:

volumetric = (L × W × H) ÷ divisor

A 40 × 30 × 20 cm parcel has volumetric = 24,000 ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg; if it actually weighs 3 kg, 4.8 kg is charged.

?Frequently asked questions

What is volumetric weight?

It is an "equivalent" weight computed from a parcel’s dimensions, used by couriers when a parcel is bulky but light. It is found by dividing the volume (length × width × height) by a divisor.

How is volumetric weight calculated?

Multiply length, width and height in centimetres and divide by the divisor (usually 5000 for air courier). For example, 40 × 30 × 20 cm ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg volumetric.

Which weight is charged, actual or volumetric?

The courier charges the greater of the two — the "chargeable weight". If the actual weight exceeds the volumetric one, the actual is charged, and vice versa.

Why do couriers use volumetric weight?

Because space in a plane or truck is limited. A large, light parcel takes up as much room as a heavy one, so it is charged by the volume it occupies.

Which divisor should I use?

It depends on the carrier: 5000 is the international air standard, some use 6000, and in Turkey the "desi" system uses 3000. Check your courier’s terms.

What does "desi" mean?

"Desi" is the term used in Turkey for volumetric weight, usually calculated with the divisor 3000. One desi corresponds to a volume of 3000 cm³.

Do I measure the box or the product?

The final box (parcel), at its widest point on each dimension. Measure the packaging as it will be handed to the courier, rounding up.
