iHow it is calculated

BMI (body mass index) is the ratio of weight to the square of height in metres. It is the most widely used indicator to estimate whether weight is appropriate:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)

For 70 kg and 1.75 m: BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 22.9 — normal weight (WHO range 18.5–24.9).

?Frequently asked questions

What is BMI (body mass index)?

BMI is your weight divided by the square of your height (kg/m²). It is a simple indicator used by the WHO to estimate whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight or obese.

How is BMI calculated?

Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m: BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 22.9.

What are the WHO BMI categories?

Under 18.5 = underweight; 18.5–24.9 = normal weight; 25–29.9 = overweight; 30–34.9 = obese class I; 35–39.9 = class II; over 40 = class III.

What BMI is considered normal?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal for adults. At 1.75 m that means a weight of roughly 57 to 76 kg.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a muscular athlete may show an “overweight” BMI without excess fat. In those cases body-fat percentage is more meaningful.

Is BMI the same for men and women?

Yes, the formula is identical and the WHO categories do not differ by sex for adults. For children and teens, age- and sex-specific growth percentiles are used instead.

How do I convert weight from pounds or height from inches?

1 kg = 2.205 lb (so lb ÷ 2.205 = kg), and 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 30.48 cm. Convert to kg and cm first, then apply the BMI formula.

What weight should I be for my height?

The weight matching a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) is found by multiplying 18.5 and 24.9 by your height in metres squared. The calculator shows this range directly for the height you enter.

Why does waist size matter alongside BMI?

BMI does not show where fat is stored. A waist over 94 cm in men or 80 cm in women signals raised metabolic risk, even at a normal BMI.

How can I lower my BMI?

Through a moderate calorie deficit (eating less than you burn) combined with activity. Losing 0.5 kg per week is sustainable; the TDEE calorie calculator helps you set a daily target.
