iHow it is calculated
Premiums are estimated from a rate per £1,000 of cover per month, scaled by age band and product type (gender-neutral, no IPT on pure protection):
Level term, age 35, £150,000 cover, non-smoker ≈ £7–£13/month. Decreasing (mortgage) cover is cheaper (≈ ×0.65); a smoker pays roughly double.

?Frequently asked questions
How is a life insurance premium worked out?
By age (the biggest factor), sum assured, term, smoker status and product type, then adjusted by full medical underwriting. This tool gives an indicative estimate from typical market rates — the real price comes from an insurer's quote.
What's the difference between level, decreasing and whole-of-life?
Level term pays a fixed amount over a fixed term. Decreasing term (mortgage life) reduces in line with a repayment mortgage and is the cheapest. Whole-of-life pays whenever you die and is much dearer, often used for inheritance-tax planning.
Is there IPT on life insurance?
No. Pure-protection life insurance is exempt from Insurance Premium Tax, so the premium you see has no IPT added — unlike home (12%) or travel (20%) cover.
Should I write the policy into trust?
Often yes. Writing a life policy into trust keeps the payout outside your estate for inheritance tax and can speed up payment to beneficiaries. It doesn't change the premium — ask your provider or adviser.
