iHow it is calculated
Fees follow the EX50 banded scale: fixed fees on small claims, then a percentage of the claim value in the middle band, up to a cap:
fee = claim value × 5% (£10k–£200k band)
On a £50,000 claim (the £10,000–£200,000 band): 50,000 × 5% = £2,500 on paper. Filed online through MCOL, the 10% discount brings it to £2,250.

?Frequently asked questions
How much is a court fee for a money claim?
It depends on the amount claimed. The EX50 scale sets fixed fees for small claims — for example £35 up to £300, £205 for £5,000 and £455 for £10,000 — then 5% of the value between £10,000 and £200,000, capped at £10,000 above that.
Is filing online cheaper?
Yes. Money Claim Online (MCOL) applies a 10% discount on the issue fee for claims up to £100,000, so a £50,000 online claim costs £2,250 instead of £2,500.
How is the fee calculated above £10,000?
For claims from £10,000 up to £200,000 the issue fee is 5% of the claim value. Above £200,000 the fee is capped at a flat £10,000.
Can the court fee be waived?
Yes — Help with Fees (fee remission) can reduce or remove the fee if you are on a low income and have limited savings. You apply when you issue the claim.
Are there other fees later in the case?
Often yes. Issuing the claim is only the first fee — hearing fees, application fees and enforcement fees may follow, each set by its own EX50 band.
