Grade Needed Calculator

Find what grade you need on a final assessment (for example the term paper) to reach your target average, from the current average and the final weight.

Enter your data

%

Enter the current average, the final assessment weight (for example 25%) and the target average, on the 0–100 scale.

=Grade needed
84
Current average72
Final grade weight25%
Target average75

The final grade counts with the chosen weight and the current average with the difference. If the result exceeds 100, the target cannot be reached from the final grade alone.

iHow it is calculated

The grade needed is found by subtracting the part covered by the current average and dividing by the final’s weight:

grade = (target current × (1 weight)) ÷ weight

With a current average of 72, a final worth 25% and a target of 75: (75 − 72 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 84.

?Frequently asked questions

How do I find what grade I need on the final?

Subtract from the target average the part covered by the current average, and divide by the final’s weight. Formula: (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

How is the grade needed for an average calculated?

For example, with a current average of 8.50, a final worth 25% and a target of 8.75: (8.75 − 8.50 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 9.50.

What weight does the term paper have?

For subjects with a term paper, it usually counts 25% (a quarter) of the term average, and the grades during the term the remaining 75%.

What if the grade needed is over 10?

It means the target cannot be reached from the final grade alone, since the maximum grade is 10. You need to either raise your current average or adjust your goal.

How do I raise my average?

Through higher grades on the remaining assessments, especially the high-weight ones (the final). The calculation shows exactly what grade you need for each goal.

Can the grade needed be very low?

Yes. If your current average is already above the target, the grade needed on the final can be low — the average is practically guaranteed even with a modest grade.

How do I plan for a target average?

Work out in advance the grade you need on each important assessment. That way you know how much to get and can prioritize your preparation.

How does it relate to the term average?

The term average combines the term grades with the final. This calculator tells you what grade on the final (or a term paper) secures your target average.
