iHow it is calculated

Insurers reward claim-free years with a No Claims Discount (NCD): the more consecutive years, the bigger the percentage off, usually capped at 5–9 years. An at-fault claim without protection typically steps you back about two years. The discount comes off the base premium:

Premium = base premium × (1 − discount%)

5 years no-claims (≈65% off) on a £600 base = £210. One at-fault claim, unprotected → back to 3 years (≈50%) = £300 next year; with NCD protection the discount is kept.

?Frequently asked questions

Is the No Claims Discount set by law?

No. Unlike statutory bonus-malus systems, UK NCD is an insurer convention. The percentages here are typical market values — your insurer sets its own ladder and cap, and the base premium varies widely.

How much is each year of no-claims worth?

Roughly: 1 year ≈ 30%, 2 ≈ 40%, 3 ≈ 50%, 4 ≈ 60%, 5+ ≈ 65–75% off, capped after 5–9 years. These are indicative, not guarantees.

What does a claim do to my NCD?

An at-fault claim without protection usually steps your NCD back about two years per claim. A non-fault claim where your insurer recovers costs normally leaves it intact.

Does protected NCD stop my premium rising?

No. Protected NCD keeps your discount percentage after a limited number of claims, but the underlying base premium can still go up, so the final price may rise anyway.
