iHow it is calculated

Ideal weight is estimated from height and sex. Classic formulas start from a base weight and add a fixed amount for each inch above 152 cm:

Devine (men) = 50 + 2.3 × inches above 152 cm

At 1.75 m (male), the Devine formula gives ≈ 70.5 kg, and the healthy weight range (BMI 18.5–24.9) is about 57–76 kg.

?Frequently asked questions

What is ideal body weight?

It is the weight estimated to be healthiest for a given height and sex. There is no single “right” value but a range, which is why we show several formulas plus the healthy-BMI range.

How is ideal weight calculated?

Classic formulas start from a base weight at 152 cm and add a fixed number of kg for each inch above it. The Devine formula, for example: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg/inch, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/inch.

What is the difference between the Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas?

All use height and sex but with different coefficients from different studies. Results usually vary by a few kilograms; their average is a reasonable estimate.

Why does ideal weight differ for men and women?

At the same height, men on average carry more muscle and bone mass, so the reference weight is a few kilograms higher.

Does ideal weight account for age?

The classic formulas do not include age. The healthy weight range based on BMI (18.5–24.9) applies to adults regardless of age.

What is the healthy weight range?

It is the weight matching a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height. At 1.75 m that is roughly 57–76 kg. It is the most widely used reference in medical practice.

Does “ideal” weight account for muscle mass?

No. Very muscular people can exceed their “ideal” weight without being overweight. Body-fat percentage gives a truer picture in those cases.

How do I convert height from feet and inches?

1 foot = 30.48 cm and 1 inch = 2.54 cm. For example, 5 ft 9 in = 5 × 30.48 + 9 × 2.54 = 175.3 cm.

Is ideal weight a mandatory goal?

No. It is a guideline. Health also depends on body composition, activity level and other factors; discuss goals with a doctor or dietitian.
