iHow it is calculated
The word count is found by splitting the text on spaces; reading time, by dividing the words by the average reading speed:
reading time = words ÷ 200 (words/min)
A 400-word text has a reading time of 400 ÷ 200 = 2 minutes; counting characters and sentences is instant.

?Frequently asked questions
How are the words in a text counted?
Words are the sequences of characters separated by spaces. The calculator splits the text on spaces and counts the resulting segments, ignoring multiple spaces.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
The total character count includes spaces, punctuation and everything you type. The “no spaces” one excludes spaces, useful for limits that refer to actual characters.
How is reading time calculated?
The number of words is divided by an average reading speed, usually 200 words per minute. A 400-word text reads in about 2 minutes.
What is the word counter used for?
To meet limits on essays, papers, articles, social media posts or SEO meta descriptions, and to estimate the reading or writing effort.
How are sentences counted?
By the sentence-ending marks: period, question mark and exclamation mark. Abbreviations with a period may sometimes be miscounted, as in any automatic count.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, and the text is not sent to any server and not saved. You can safely work with sensitive content.
How many words are on a page?
Roughly, an A4 page at 12-point font with normal spacing has around 500 words. The number varies with the font, margins and line spacing.
How do I reduce a text’s word count?
Remove filler words, turn long sentences into short ones, use active verbs and cut repetition. Rereading with fresh eyes highlights what to trim.
