iHow it is calculated
Single-trip premiums scale with destination × days × age; annual multi-trip is a flat rate by destination. Travel carries the higher 20% IPT (already in the price):
premium ≈ base(destination, days) × age factor × travellers
A single trip to Europe, 10 days, age 35 ≈ £11–£20. Worldwide including the USA costs the most; 3+ trips a year usually make annual multi-trip cheaper.

?Frequently asked questions
What determines the price of travel insurance?
Policy type (single vs annual), destination area (Europe / Worldwide excluding or including the USA & Canada), trip length, traveller ages, cover level, excess and any pre-existing conditions. US medical costs push the top band highest.
Single-trip or annual multi-trip?
Single-trip suits one holiday. Annual multi-trip covers unlimited trips (up to a max length per trip) for a year and is typically 1.5–2.5× a single trip — so from about three trips a year it usually works out cheaper.
Does a GHIC replace travel insurance?
No. The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives access to state healthcare in the EU on the same terms as locals, but it doesn't cover repatriation, private treatment or non-EU destinations. Treat it as complementary — some insurers reduce the medical excess if you hold one.
Why is travel insurance taxed more?
Travel insurance carries the higher-rate Insurance Premium Tax of 20% (versus 12% on home and medical cover). It is already included in the typical prices shown.
