iHow it is calculated
A period life table records, for each age, the average number of years of life still ahead — the remaining life expectancy, written eₓ. Add it to your current age to get your projected total age:
projected age = current age + remaining life expectancy (eₓ)
For a 65-year-old man in the United Kingdom, the ONS tables give a remaining life expectancy of about 18.5 years — a projected total age of roughly 83.5. That is higher than life expectancy at birth (≈78.8), because he has already survived to 65.

?Frequently asked questions
What is life expectancy at a given age?
It is the average number of further years a person of that exact age and sex can expect to live, read from a national life table (the value known as eₓ). Add it to your current age to get the projected total age.
Why is my projected total age higher than life expectancy at birth?
Because you have already survived the risks of earlier life. Life expectancy at birth averages in people who die young, so anyone who reaches, say, 65 can on average expect to pass the birth figure.
Is this a prediction of how long I will live?
No. A life table gives a population average for people of your age and sex today. Your own lifespan depends heavily on lifestyle, health, income and genetics, so individual outcomes vary widely around the average.
Which data does this UK calculator use?
The ONS National Life Tables 2021–2023 for the United Kingdom, split by sex. These are period life tables, based on mortality rates recorded during that three-year window.
Why do women live longer than men on average?
Across almost every country women show lower mortality at each age, from a mix of biological and behavioural factors. The tables therefore give women a higher remaining life expectancy than men of the same age.
What is the difference between a period and a cohort life table?
A period table applies today's mortality rates to every age, as if they never changed. A cohort table projects future improvements in mortality, so it usually shows longer lifespans. This tool uses the period basis.
