iHow it is calculated

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 that are not also divisible by 400. This adds 29 February and gives the year 366 days:

leap = (year ÷ 4) and not (year ÷ 100 without ÷ 400)

2024 and 2000 are leap years; 2026, 1900 and 2100 are not. Next: 2028, 2032, 2036.

?Frequently asked questions

What is a leap year?

A year with 366 days instead of 365, which has 29 February. One day is added every 4 years to align the calendar with the astronomical year (≈365.2422 days).

How do I know if a year is a leap year?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 that are not divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years, but 1900 and 2100 are not.

Why was 1900 not a leap year, but 2000 was?

1900 is divisible by 100 but not by 400, so it is not a leap year. 2000 is divisible by 400, so it is. The divisible-by-400 rule corrects the over-counting.

Is 2026 a leap year?

No. 2026 is not divisible by 4, so it has 365 days and February has 28. The next leap years are 2028, 2032, 2036.

How many days does February have in a leap year?

29 days, versus 28 in an ordinary year. The added day is 29 February.

What are the next leap years?

After 2024 come 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040 — every 4 years, with century exceptions (2100 will not be a leap year).

Why do we need leap years?

Because a solar year lasts about 365.2422 days. Without the extra day every 4 years, the calendar would gradually drift out of step with the seasons.

What happens to people born on 29 February?

Their birthday calendrically “falls” only every 4 years. In non-leap years it is usually celebrated on 28 February or 1 March.
