iHow it is calculated
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of twelve months (about 354 days a year), so it drifts roughly 11 days earlier against the Gregorian year. This converter uses the Umm al-Qura civil calendar built into every modern browser. Gregorian → Hijri is read directly from it; Hijri → Gregorian is the exact inverse, found by matching the same calendar:
Gregorian date ↔ Hijri year / month / day · Umm al-Qura calendar
For example, 18 February 2026 is 1 Ramadan 1447 AH, and 1 Shawwal 1447 (Eid al-Fitr) falls on 20 March 2026. The Islamic New Year 1448 begins on 16 June 2026.

?Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Hijri and Gregorian calendars?
The Gregorian calendar is solar (365–366 days a year). The Hijri calendar is lunar, with 12 months of 29 or 30 days totalling about 354 days, so Hijri dates move roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
Which Hijri calendar does the converter use?
It uses the Umm al-Qura calendar — the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia, built into your browser's internationalization engine. It is the standard reference for administrative and most religious dates.
Why can the date differ by a day from what I expected?
Umm al-Qura is a calculated (astronomical) calendar. Some countries and mosques start a month one day later based on the naked-eye moon sighting, so a religious date may differ from the tabulated one by a day.
When is Ramadan 2026 in the Gregorian calendar?
1 Ramadan 1447 AH corresponds to 18 February 2026, and Ramadan runs until 19 March 2026, with Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) on 20 March 2026 by the Umm al-Qura calendar.
AH stands for Anno Hegirae — 'in the year of the Hijra', the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, which marks year 1 of the Islamic calendar (1 Muharram 1 AH ≈ 16 July 622 CE).
