iHow it is calculated
Each A-level grade is worth a fixed number of UCAS Tariff points. Add the points for every subject to get the total universities see, then divide by the number of subjects for the average grade:
Grades A*, A and B: 56 + 48 + 40 = 144 points across 3 subjects — an average of 48 points each, i.e. an A.

?Frequently asked questions
How are UCAS Tariff points calculated?
Each A-level grade has a set value on the UCAS Tariff: A*=56, A=48, B=40, C=32, D=24, E=16 (U=0). Your total is simply the points for all your subjects added together.
What is a typical university offer?
Offers are usually stated either as grades (for example AAB) or as a number of UCAS points. AAB equals 48 + 48 + 40 = 136 points across three A-levels.
How is the average grade worked out?
The tool divides your total points by the number of subjects, then maps the average points per subject back to the nearest letter grade.
Do AS-levels or EPQ count?
They carry their own smaller Tariff values and can be added to a UCAS points total, but many offers are quoted in A-level grades. This tool covers full A-levels; add other qualifications separately if an offer counts them.
Is a higher points total always better for admission?
Points help for tariff-based offers and clearing, but many competitive courses ask for specific grades in specific subjects rather than a raw points total.
Does the calculator store my grades?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved. Refreshing the page clears the values.
